African Drumming 2011

Half Term African Drumming & Dance Workshops

This October half term Pied PIper is continuing it's ongoing programme of activities for children aged 7 - 11 years, with a sereis of free workshops exploring African Drumming, Song and Dance.

Led by Pied Piper regular Simon Abbott (left) and Senegali musician Pape Thiam, participants will be able to experience different styles of music from Western Africa.

The workshops will focus on a range of Africn drummign techniques, give participants opportunities to try different African percussion instruments and provide hands on experience of performing the specific rhythms and riffs associated with West African drumming on djembes.

In addition to the percussion activities, children will also learn some traditional African songs and dances, as well as finding out about the background and context of each piece of music.

Every workshop will conclude with a short performance by participants for their families and friends, giving children a platform to showcase their new skills.

These workshops were delivered by Pied PIper as part of the NYMAZ programme of acitivity across North Yorkshire.

Pied Piper is extremely grateful to the funders of this project, NYMAZ, Youth Music, Arts Council England and Ryedale District Council.
