Music Creator

Music Creator in Residence

Music Creator in Residence was a unique series of workshops for young people incorporating composition, the creation of sound making devices and sound sculptures, recording skills and technical manipulation of sound. The end result was the creation of a CD of soundscapes and music reflecting the environment of North Yorkshire's National Parks, The North York Moors and The Yorkshire Dales.

"wow, it's magic" ... "it looks like there are a million strings" - Participants

In addition to the creative elements of the project, participants also learned about the basic principles of sound production by humans and animals, and found out more about the unique natural environment of the National Parks.

"Look - the birds are coming to listen" - Participant

Workshops were led by internationally-acclaimed artist Max Eastley with musicians Andy Diagram, Steve Beresford and Lol Coxhill and involved over 300 young people from across the region.

"It really makes you notice that the wind comes and goes" - Participant

This flagship project was offered to a diverse range of groups, from primary schools to youth groups, special schools to youth jazz bands, and all enjoyed the unusual way in which music and sound was combined with the natural environment in the creation of soundscapes, new compositions and sound sculptures. For almost all the groups getting outside and engaging creatively with the stunning environment of the National Parks was the highlight of the workshops.

This project was delivered by Pied Piper on behalf of NYMAZ, North Yorkshire's Youth Music Action Zone and was funded by NYMAZ, The PRS Foundation for New Music, The Yorkshire Dales Sustainable Development Fund and The North York Moors Sustainable Development Fund.
