Schools

Work with schools

Pied Piper has been working with Ryedale's schools since its inception in 1997, providing access to a diverse selection of music and artists to some of the county's most rural schools.

Pied Piper works with Ryedale's schools in three ways:

  • Pied Piper devises a project which helps schools meet a specific gap in provision and invites them to take part in activities - e.g. a series of participatory performances or workshops by culturally diverse musicians
  • Pied Piper works collaboratively with an individual school, or cluster of schools, to develop a project or programme of work which meets the specific aims and interests for pupils at that school - e.g. the development of an ensemble in residence programme to work with a school's big band or chamber ensemble
  • Pied Piper is 'bought in' by a school to provide a musician to deliver a very specific project or piece of work - e.g. to provide a musician to work with Gifted and Talented students on improvisation, or to provide African musicians to lead workshops as part of Black History Month

Primary Schools

In 2008 Pied Piper invited all of Ryedale's Primary Schools to complete a questionnaire about the musical needs of their school to enable us to develop projects which could support their current music provision and meet any specific gaps or training needs. The response we received from primary schools has provided Pied Piper with a very clear objective for our work with primary aged pupils - more access to a diverse range of musical styles, with particular emphasis on world and folk music.

Secondary Schools

Pied Piper has worked with all four of Ryedale's Secondary Schools on a variety of projects. Past workshops include film making with Ian McMillan, music technology and sound engineering with Andy Diagram and Graham Dowdell, percussion with Rhythm Attack, jazz with 6pac and improvisation with Annie Whitehead.

Special Schools

Pied Piper has worked regularly with Welburn Hall School near Kirkbymoorside for a number of years, and more recently we have been commissioned by NYMAZ to deliver residency projects in other special schools in North Yorkshire. SEN projects are developed in consultation with the partner schools to ensure that we are providing schools with musicians with the appropriate skills, training and experience to engage young people with a range of learning and physical disabilities in creative music activities.
